What is vegan leather?
Vegan leather is a leather-look material made without animal hide. In our range that's the PU and plant-based materials — and alongside them we stock one recycled, leather-based option. It's worth knowing which you're buying:
- PU (polyurethane) — the modern standard, and 100% vegan. A coated fabric with a soft hand, good flex and no PVC. Most of our range is PU, and it's what most makers mean by "vegan leather" today.
- Bio-based & plant materials — cactus, apple, cork and similar; also vegan. A growing category, useful to know it exists, though most production-ready material sold by the metre today is still PU-based.
- Recycled bonded leather — reclaimed leather fibres bonded into a workable sheet (our Salamander line). Because it's made from real leather offcuts it's leather-based rather than vegan, but it's a lower-footprint choice with a firm, paper-like body that folds and embosses cleanly. We label it clearly.
What we don't sell is cheap PVC-backed vinyl. Our PU and plant-based materials are PETA-Approved Vegan; the Salamander range is our recycled, leather-based option. Everything is chosen because it actually behaves well under a needle. If you want the honest short version: vegan leather isn't "fake leather," it's its own material — lighter, more consistent sheet-to-sheet, and easier to work than hide, with its own strengths and limits.
The materials we carry
We stock a working maker's range across finishes — smooth, textured, satin, suede and croc — in a deep colour selection. Browse by finish:
Not sure which finish suits your project? That's exactly what the sample pack and colour swatch ring are for — see and feel every texture in your own light before you commit to full sheets.
Vegan leather vs real leather — an honest comparison
We're not here to tell you vegan leather is better at everything. Here's the straight trade-off, from someone who cuts both:
| Vegan leather (PU / plant-based) | Animal leather (hide) | |
|---|---|---|
| Consistency | Uniform thickness & colour, sheet to sheet — no scars or thin spots | Varies across the hide; natural marks and edges |
| Workability | Cuts clean, no waste around irregular edges, easy to sew | Skilled cutting around shape; more waste |
| Weight | Lighter for the same finished piece | Heavier |
| Cost | Lower and predictable per m² | Higher, priced by the whole hide |
| Ethics | No animal hide; PETA-Approved Vegan | Animal-derived |
| Patina | Holds its finish; distressed looks are built in (e.g. ROMA OLD) | Develops a natural patina over years |
Short version: for consistent, repeatable production — bags, wallets, covers, upholstery panels — vegan leather is usually the easier, cheaper, more predictable choice. For a one-off heirloom where natural patina is the point, hide still has its place.
How it's sold & cut to order
Everything is cut fresh from the roll when you order — you're never buying pre-cut stock that's been sitting around. Standard sizes are:
- 20 × 140 cm — a generous strip, ideal for straps, small goods and testing a material.
- 30 × 140 cm — the workhorse for bags and multiple pieces.
- 50 × 140 cm — our full sheet, for larger panels and cutting layouts.
Thickness runs roughly 0.35 mm to 0.8 mm depending on the material — thinner weights wrap and line beautifully, heavier ones hold structure. Need an exact size that isn't listed? We cut custom, down to the millimetre (e.g. 46.5 × 12 cm) — just send your measurements.
How to choose the right material
Colour and texture never read true on a screen. The foolproof method, and the one we'd use ourselves:
- Start with a sample. Order the swatch ring or a sample pack — feel the hand, check the colour in daylight, test a stitch line.
- Match thickness to the job. Structured bag panels want body; linings and wrapped edges want a thinner, more flexible sheet.
- Buy the size you'll actually cut. Cut-to-order means you're not paying for offcuts you'll never use.
